Indeed, whether intended for sport or display, a lawn can suffer and deteriorate particularly and especially during warm periods.

Mowing the lawn in summer

The grass grows less quickly in the middle of summer. It is not necessary to mow as regularly as in other seasons. However, in order for your lawn to get through the hot season without problems, you should make your preparations in the spring, after the last days of winter.

Regular cutting actually helps to curb the growth of blades of grass in height. The lawn become denser and the grass roots tend to grow. The lawn is therefore better anchored in the soil (practical for all sports grounds) and, when the first hot days arrive, the network of roots with then find it much easier to draw on the available humidity.

Besides the springtime preparation it is also advisable to mow higher (2-3 centimetres), once the summer sets in, to keep the maximum humidity at ground level and avoid the grass turning yellow from lack of water. Watering the lawn in summer

When the drought continues and there’s no sign of rain it may be important to water your lawn, especially if used for sports. Remember, though, there are a few basic rules you should follow when watering.

First, watering too regularly is often useless if not actually harmful (this also depends on the type of lawn, certain types such as the English lawns need more water). In fact, faced with endless high temperature, the grass metabolism will slow down and it will not absorb as much water as during normal weather. Then there is the risk that the surplus will evaporate and, worse, if your lawn is under felt, the water cannot reach the roots and will settle in this layer of organic materials instead, with the risk of encouraging the development of disease and fungi in your lawn.

Also, don’t forget that watering in the middle of the day is counterproductive. The heat of the sun will evaporate the water in a few minutes, before it has the chance to be completely absorbed. Wait at least a couple of hours after the sun goes down, or even do the watering in the early morning. It’s also best to do a ‘big’ watering, so that the water can be absorbed by the soil. Then, once that soil stays wet, further watering is pointless.

What exactly is thatch?

Thatch is a layer of organic matter which has woven together and is found between soil and grass. It can be up to 4 cm thick and causes various issues. The layer appears when organic debris produced by the grass accumulates too quickly to be broken down naturally by the soil’s organic activity. This build-up can be explained by the presence of lignin in the lawn’s various components, a biomolecule resistant to decomposition that is one of the main components of wood and rigidifies the various sections of a plant. In grass, the stem nodes, the collar (base of the grass blade) and the rhizomes all contain large quantities of lignin, which is why they decompose so slowly through biological activity and therefore form the majority of the thatch.

Why does thatch grow?

Thatch is a natural phenomenon that can be accelerated by several factors:

  1. Some species of grass produce more lignin and therefore more thatch.
  2. Acidic soil decreases the number of microorganisms capable of decomposing organic waste.
  3. Some pesticides can affect the population of worms that curb the production of thatch by helping grass to decompose.
  4. Frequent use of fertiliser will increase thatch production, as it acidifies the soil and stimulates the growth of roots, stems and rhizomes, which cause thatch.
  5. Intensive watering can decrease the speed at which thatch decomposes by limiting microorganism activity.
  6. Too much grass residue can encourage the formation of thatch.

What problems does thatch cause?

Thatch in itself is not problematic. A thin coat can protect the grass by partially insulating it, increasing its flexibility and resistance to threading whilst decreasing soil compacting. Unfortunately, in most cases, the layer of thatch becomes too thick and the disadvantages end up outweighing the benefits:

  1. Thatch acts like a sponge and holds water, preventing effective soil irrigation.
  2. Watering in dry weather is more difficult, as the grass is more likely to dry out.
  3. Too much thatch can make the grass more sensitive to differences in temperature.
  4. The thatch is an area where diseases, mushrooms and pests can develop quickly.
  5. Pesticides struggle to eliminate these pests, as they cannot penetrate the thatch.
  6. The mechanical operations required to remove thatch always risk damaging the lawn.
  7. Fertilisers also struggle to penetrate this organic barrier.
  8. The grass acidifies and moss appears faster.

To make your turf denser and healthier, it’s essential to mow it frequently, as when upward growth is slowed by very regular cutting, the grass adapts to this and spreads out across the surface by increasing the number of shoots. How to prevent turf diseases

A study conducted by the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) shows that robot mowers can be a useful weapon in the fight against various turf diseases. In fact, our Bigmow robot mower helps reduce the impact of diseases caused by turf fungi.

The various turf diseases

Every groundsperson is keen for their sports turf to be in the best possible condition all year round – so some of their worst enemies are various turf diseases such as blight, grey mould, red thread, Fusarium, Helminthosporium, mildew, Rhizoctonia, and Pythium. Most of the time, these diseases will disappear after applying an anti-fungal treatment, but unfortunately, treating them this way does not eliminate the cause of the problem.

What causes an outbreak of a turf disease?

Many of these diseases are fungal in origin and develop when certain factors that favour fungi growth are combined. That’s why simply treating the disease will not suffice: to eradicate it permanently, you need to eliminate the factors that led to its emergence. Red thread (Laetisaria fuciformis), for instance, is a turf disease which manifests itself through the appearance of red threads, mycelium, between the blades of grass, attacking the turf clump by clump. Dampness, lack of nitrogen, an excessive amount of uncollected grass cuttings or poor aeration of the upper layer are all factors which can encourage this fungus to develop.

How effective are robot mowers against turf diseases?

An STRI study conducted between March and November 2010 at the Bingley St. Ives Estate demonstrated that the use of robot mowers can limit the spread of a disease. This study compared the different results obtained with a cylinder mower and a Bigmow automatic robot mower, which were both tested on two similar areas of turf each measuring 10 x 25 metres.

Among the various factors studied, one category looked at diseases. And the results showed that, in June 2010, when the two areas were attacked by red thread, the area where the Bigmow robot mower was used displayed far less of the disease than the area cut with the standard mower. Although this study relates only to red thread, it is possible to make a link between better resistance to disease and other factors found in the study; for instance, the Bigmow also achieved better uniformity and neatness in its area. What’s more, the excessive build-up of grass cuttings and poor aeration, both factors in the outbreak of red thread, are avoided thanks to high-quality mulching.

Traditional regeneration by overseeding: advice from a pro

When should overseeding be done?

The period for regenerating football pitches comes at the end of the competition season, in May/June. Note that a second seeding can be done at the start of the season. Nine times out of ten, traditional overseeding is the option chosen. Complete regeneration, including scalping the ground, is performed when damage is too severe and on pitches that will allow it. Using a machine (like the Koro Topfield Maker) actually entails a certain cost, and the ground cannot be used for some time afterwards.

1Sanding

Spreading sand makes it possible to improve the texture and structure of the soil over the first few centimetres. Between 30 and 60 tonnes of sand are uniformly distributed over the pitch. This operation can be reputed if necessary several times a year, but its effectiveness will be optimum during the grass growing period of grass growth. Too heavy a sanding risks stifling the grass and allowing matting to proliferate. It’s better to use regular sanding in accordance with soil analysis. Certain pitches benefit from monthly “top dressing” with sand. So the pitch does actually get higher from year to year! After a Koro-type machine has been used several times for scalping the ground, the original level is restored.

Can the sand wear down the robot mower blades?

No, as the sand does not stay on the surface; watering makes it penetrate more easily. To have an idea: 90 tonnes of sand spread over a 7140 m² pitch are going to represent a height of just 0.8 cm. Which is a lot lower than the recommended cutting height of 4 cm. On a golf green, on the other hand, yes, the blades are going to be subject to the sand, as the cut height there is only 4 mm.

2Aeration

Trampling by players, maintenance machine movements, precipitation, and natural settling of the soil can cause the ground to be compacted. Now the soil’s air/water balance is a determining factor in obtaining a healthy, long-lasting pitch surface. Hollow tine aeration is rarely performed on football pitches, but it is used on golf greens, where the low grass height allows it to be implemented easily. Deep-tine aeration using Verti-Drain is preferred for football pitches.

3Overseeding

Between 150–300 kg of 100% rye grass are spread over the pitch. The type of seeder used will determine the number of passes needed. The fertilizer must contain a higher proportion of phosphorus so as to stimulate the young seedlings. And very low salt content is required, as salts in the fertilizer will have a greater effect on the young seedlings than on more mature grass. Hence this salinity index is a parameter not to be overlooked in sowing or overseeding. On the contrary, opting for an agricultural fertilizer, laden with salt, will affect the effectiveness of the regeneration and hence on the quality of the pitch.

4Watering

The watering step is tricky. The idea is to keep the ground damp, but not sodden. It is recommended to water as often as necessary, depending on the weather. A hydrometric probe makes it possible to check the moisture level, but checking by hand can do the job perfectly well too. It’s a question of keeping the top 2–3 cm of soil moist, as the young shoots’ root systems don’t allow them to go deeper to look for water. The air/water ratio, already mentioned at the aeration step, is important. Air is essential to avoid stifling the soil.

How long to obtain a carpet of grass?

Using rye grass and with optimum watering conditions, the plant is capable of sprouting in 4 days, to start rolling in 15 days, and to form a carpet of young grass in 3 weeks. But watch out, these various steps can take much longer. They depend in particular on the monitoring and the type of fertilizer.

Can we mow during the regeneration?

What about mowing during this regeneration process? If there is still a relatively dense carpet of grass, robots can be put into operation directly on the ground. Their blades, changed just before regeneration, are sharp enough to cut the young grass. The cutting height is raised to 4 cm and, once the grass is strong enough, it can be lowered. Where the ground is very bare, you must wait 1 to 2 weeks before using the robot on the ground. The cutting height can then be raised to 5 cm and then lowered gradually.

Regeneration boosted thanks to the robot mower

The mulch from the robot mowers allows faster grass regeneration than that from traditional mulching cylinder mowers. Mowing frequency (up to 10 cuts per week, against 1 or 2 using traditional mowing methods) will lead to finer cuts, and hence much finer clippings which will be more easily attacked by the micro-organisms. The decomposition will be more efficient, which avoids the formation of dense matting. Then the nutrients will be returned very rapidly. The grass is constantly being cut, which allows a regular fertilizer plan, thereby offering the club savings and a reduction in its environmental impact.

1An aerated lawn

Aeration provides better water infiltration into the soil and oxygenation of the roots. Better growth will be the result! How do you know if your lawn needs to be aerated? Test your lawn by pushing a 10 cm pencil into it. If you need to struggle to push it in, your lawn might be too compact. There are manual aerators and mechanical aerators to perform decompaction. It is recommended that you aerate once or twice a year, in the spring and/or autumn.

2Correct mowing height

The mowing height varies according to the terrain. A private lawn does not require the same mowing height as a golf green or a football pitch!! An ideal height for a private lawn is around 3 to 5 cm.

3Regular mowing

It’s a well-known fact: regular mowing gives great results. On the other hand, it is hard to restore grass that has not been maintained.

4Nourished and irrigated grass

In addition to frequent mowing, the lawn must be nourished and it is important for it to maintain an adequate level of moisture. If not, the lawn could turn yellow and start thinning.

Soil analysis and fertilizing plan: advice from a pro

When is the best time to perform a soil analysis?

Performing a soil analysis at the end of the growing period, in October / November, makes it possible to establish a real fertilizing and correction plan. All the fertilizer needed for the year can then be planned. The analysis is sometimes done between January and March, but Autumn remains the wisest choice, as corrections can be made depending on the results of the analyses. Supposing there was a lack of potassium or phosphorus: the former can be applied before or in the middle of Winter, and the latter, more mobile, just before Spring. Note that in Agricultural Centres make it possible to perform soil analyses for football pitches at competitive prices.

A fertilizing plan customized for the ground

The annual fertilizing plan is essential to ensure a quality pitch. The balances in the soil actually change from year to year. The levels of potassium and magnesium, for example, will vary according to the weather, in particular. This is why the basis of the plan is the soil analysis. Each period demands different doses and types of fertilizer. It is recommended to add phosphorus at the start of the Winter to help the cells withstand the frost better, and in Summer to combat drought. Furthermore, the fertilizing plan is a guide for determining the quantities of elements demanded by the soil. The benefits: reduced outgoings and an image as an environmentally-friendly club.

An environmentally-friendly football club

Ground scalping: different methods

Should ground scalping be done frequently?

Where the pitch comprises principally annual meadow grass, it becomes indispensable. All pitches are subjected to damage from “poa annua” (Latin name). At present, there is no antidote to annual meadow grass. This is why regeneration is a recurring step in the life of a pitch. On English pitches, it is done systematically every year. When the pitch is saturated with “poa annua”, it can’t withstand the Winter and intensive play. Spring stripping is then the only solution.

Burn off the ground completely or remove 2–3 cm?

The scalping operation can be done in two different ways: completely burn the ground to really kill all plant life, or “just” remove a 2–3 cm layer of material using a machine like the Koro Topfield Maker. The number of passes will vary according to the type of machine and the needs of the ground. After the abrasion, the surface annual meadow grass and part of the seeds will have been removed.

Laying roll turf or re-seeding?

Choose to lay roll turf or re-seed? The best way of going about it, for complete regeneration, is global sowing. Even though the turf solution can tolerate a game within 3–4 days of laying, there’s no guarantee that the grass will adapt well to its new biotope. The rolls’ environment has in fact been abruptly changed – the grass may never take root. In situ sowing is adapts directly to the soil. However, full regeneration, without turfing, will take 8–10 weeks. But the requirements of the competition seasons sometimes do not leave the pitch this much time.

Mulching by robot mowers: a sizeable advantage

Mulching cuts make it possible to constantly regenerate the organic matter. The additional benefit of the robot system is the number of cuts. The frequency will lead to finer cuts, and hence much finer clippings, which will be more easily attacked by the micro-organisms. The decomposition will be more efficient, which avoids the formation of dense matting. Then the nutrients will be returned very rapidly. Cylinder mowers cannot offer this process. In environmental terms too, mulching is an unbeatable method. It considerably reduces the need for chemical products.

Grass maintenance: Five tips to get it through the winter!

In the autumn, grass has sometimes been weakened by harsh summertime conditions, dry weather, insects, and even diseases which can leave behind traces.  How do you repair the lawn and prepare it for winter? A five-step procedure.

1Repairing the summer damage

Does the lawn look thin or discoloured (brown) after the summer? Fertilise the damaged grass once or twice in the autumn, at the start and in mid-season. It is a good idea to add nutrients before the cold season.

Avoid excessive fertilisation, however. Excessive addition of the chemicals found in fertilisers can cause a chemical burn. Results: excessive growth and weakening of the plant. Mulching can mitigate the problem by adding natural fertilisation.

Also note that every type of grass needs a specific fertiliser formula. There is no universal fertiliser. The type of fertiliser is defined according to the intensity of use of the grass, the soil type, and season.

2Allow the grass to breathe

It is important to let grass breathe. Remove the leaves that accumulate during the autumn. Grass reacts badly when deprived of air and light. Rot and moss will develop.

3Do the last mow

The last mow plays a role in getting through the winter. When should you do it? As soon as the grass has stopped growing, and most importantly, before the first frost. How high should it be cut? The maximum cutting height is 5 cm. Why? To strengthen the roots of the grass. Tall grass before the winter will form a carpet that is too thick, vulnerable to the development of illnesses (grey or pink snow mould).

4Minimise winter damage

To protect the lawn during the winter, it is advisable to avoid walking on a frozen or snow-covered lawn. Footprints on frozen ground can leave big yellow patches on the grass in the springtime. And snow can burn the grass under the pressure of footsteps. So please forget about playing football or golf during that season.

Mulching is a mowing technique that finely chops the grass to leave it lying in the form of particles after the passage of the mower.
