Saving 77,000 kg of CO₂ per year at its municipal sports complexes
In the face of climate issues, rising energy costs, and the shortage of qualified workers, more and more communities are choosing intelligent robotisation of green space maintenance. The Dutch city of Venlo is a concrete, measurable example of this.
Thanks to the deployment of 23 Belrobotics professional robotic mowers in its sports grounds, the municipality is now achieving an annual reduction by 77,000 kg of its CO₂ emissions, whilst improving the quality of its grounds and the operational efficiency of its teams.
A sustainable strategy for more than 75 natural grass fields
Venlo manages around 75 natural grass sports fields (football, rugby, baseball, and softball). These fields were historically maintained with machines powered by combustion engines and required heavy logistics, high fuel consumption, and constant availability of personnel.
Within the framework of a tendering process, an innovative approach was proposed: replacing conventional mowers with Belrobotics autonomous robotic mowers capable of operating continuously, precisely, and 100% on electricity.
After a convincing pilot phase on the largest sports complex in the city, the solution was deployed on all the sites in the municipality.

Autonomous robotic mowers for consistent quality of play
Belrobotics robots perform frequent and regular mowing in any weather. This approach has several major advantages for sports field managers:
- Consistent, uniform cut
- No piles of grass
- Denser, more resilient grass
- Better playability of pitches
- Less heavy mechanical servicing
The cutting height can be adjusted precisely, to adapt the maintenance according to the season and dry periods, whilst protecting the health of the grass.

77,000 kg of CO₂ saved by robotic mowing
The switch from diesel machines to Belrobotics robotic mowers results in a significant environmental impact. In Venlo, the annual savings are estimated at:
- 77,000 kg of CO₂ avoided per year
- Drastically lower fuel consumption
- Less noise pollution
- Elimination of polluting emissions
The robots used are based on precision GPS-RTK technology, which allows navigation to within a centimetre without boundary wires.
The city of Venlo uses different models according to the surface, maintaining up to 75 000 m² per robot, with several floating cutting heads for consistent professional quality.

A long-term vision for communities
The city of Venlo is already exploring other robotic applications in addition to mowing, especially for weeding and the sustainable maintenance of public spaces. Robotisation is therefore becoming a strategic lever to:
- Attain climate targets
- Secure maintenance in the face of personnel shortages
- Guarantee constant quality of sports infrastructures
- Reduce costs over the long term
Belrobotics, partner of sustainable cities
With more than 5000 professional robots deployed worldwide, Belrobotics supports communities, sports clubs, and managers of large spaces in their transition to more sustainable, more efficient, and quieter management.
Venlo’s example proves that sports performance can be combined with operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.
